Rafael Nadal overcame a right knee injury to win his 90th match in his last 91 attempts on clay, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday to advance to the Mercedes Cup quarterfinals. The second-ranked Spaniard played with a taped knee and leg and was treated courtside after the 37th-ranked German won the first game played between the two.
“It was similar to what happened at Wimbledon,” said the top-seeded Nadal. “I felt this stab of pain and I held myself back at first on the court and then it got better.”
“At the start, I really doubted if I could keep playing,” Nadal said. “I believe I can keep going. Maybe its not 100 percent, but its pretty good.”
